In Mark’s life, sorrow came in with a bang, knocking him off his feet. “I was just so uncomfortable being the person I was,” he says softly of his middle school years in California. “I’ve always had that feeling of being alone. At fifteen, I smoked a joint and thought I had found the magic cure.” Within a year, Mark tried cocaine and began an addiction that would imprison him for thirty-seven years.
