Diapers & Hygiene Items

“God bless you and thank you,” Frances
(far right) says to all the people who donated food and diapers to the Mission. “Kids go through diapers so fast,” her mom Bernice (right) adds. “We run out of them. There are a lot of people who can’t afford them.” At the Mission, the women received diapers and everyday hygiene items for their families.

Clothing

Melvin (right) is going to school during the day to become an auto mechanic. At night, he works late: “I clean floors at [a local drug store]. I needed red shirts and khaki pants.” He was able to find the clothes he needed for his job in the Mission’s clothing room.

Joe (far right) is a retired carpenter who has lived and worked in Denver since 1939, and has been married to his wife for 61 years. He says, “I’m all crippled up and my shoulders were broken. I’ve had surgery in one knee.” He came to the Mission with his son Mikkell (right), looking for shoes with an arch support that could take pressure off his back. “We’re pretty close,” Mikkell says, looking affectionately at his Dad. He currently stays with his parents while he looks for work. “It’s so hard to find a job out there right now. I don’t know what to do. This helps us tremendously. We can’t afford to go out and buy shoes.”

Food Boxes

Anna (right) says, “My husband and I got separated. I’m concerned about getting a job.” She has four children. “This is a matter of life and death. When you get hungry, that is a terrible thing.”

Household  Items

When asked what receiving a washer and dryer through the Mission means to her family, Tzu-Yim (right) says, “It means I can have clean clothes. Sometimes I didn’t have money for the laundromat before.” She recently got a job working as a waitress. Tzu-Yim is most looking forward to getting back on her feet and being “able to help my kids.”

Furniture

“I’m a single parent of two young boys,” David (right) says. “I’m recently laid off, struggling, and I need a dresser.” David worked in construction, but “the housing market is down now. I’m hoping to be able to go back to work. I’m out there job searching every day.” From the Mission, David received a bookshelf, a rug, furnishings, and a diaper disposal for his one-and-a-half year old son. “This means a lot to me, because I can’t afford to go purchase these things even at a thrift store. I’m very thankful for the Denver Rescue Mission.”

From the CEO

Dear Friends,

Sometimes the best advocates for our programs are those we serve. Recently, I was talking with a long-time donor who asked me:

“Brad, do you know how I got started giving to the Mission? I had a friend who was a homeless woman, and she recommended giving to the Denver Rescue Mission because she said you all did the best work of anyone. I have been giving to you these past years because of her recommendation.”

Wow!

And this unusual report came from a graduate of our New Life Program:

I was in jail, and knew I needed help with my drug addiction. I had contacted the Denver Rescue Mission’s Harvest Farm, and they had said they would take me into the New Life Program. The problem was that because of a waiting list there it would be 60 days until I could get in. When I stood in front of the judge who was about to release me, I told him about Harvest Farm and how I needed help. I asked him if I could stay in jail until a place opened up for me. The judge said, “In all my years on the bench I have never had someone ask me to stay in jail. If your parents can pay the $1.81 a day it costs to feed you, you can stay until there is a place for you in the Mission’s program.” So I stayed another 59 days in jail. My life was changed forever at the Farm. I am not the same person as the guy who was in jail so many months ago.

The work of Jesus is not slowed down by the economy. Lives are being changed in our city, and you are playing a significant and important role. Your donations help us address people’s most basic needs, provide long-term recovery programs, and share the hope only Jesus can bring!

Thank you so much for your partnership.

God bless,
Brad Meuli
